“In listening deeply to others and taking in their meaning we choose the risk of being changed by what we hear. In a sense listening is a radical act. [listening] requires humility, softening our certainties, allowing ourselves to learn and change in the company of one another” (Brown and Bennett on Dialogue). “For significant learning to occur there must be a change. And significant learning requires the change to be ‘lasting’ and ‘important’ in terms of the learner’s life.” (Dee Fink)

If your looking for a course which includes in class lectures, daily homework, and tons of writing, than Communication 12 is not for you. This is more for a person who enjoys class discussions, group prjects, and participating in other culture's lifestyles. I would sugest this course to you if you like to learn hands on, rather than studying notes. But If you have a busy schedule in life, this course is not for you. Especially because you have to do group work and schedule around their plans. It would not be such a good idea to take this course if you dont have much money or transportation. This is because this course has a symposium project which demands that you bring artifacts, and clothing, and food of a certain culture. How do you get that stuff? You spend money. So thats all about this class. I laid it out as much as i could, and hopefully you like it if you take this course.
do it to it.. it's not a lot to bear, it's fun, you'll make relationships, you'll laugh and maybe cry and laugh and shit, it'll be tight.. it's one of the coolest/easiest classes..
Comm 12 is a very fun class. It really makes you think "outside the box." The class discussions are great because you get to voice your opinion on different topics and you get to hear other peoples opinions. The group projects are also very fun. Overall, the class is great. Hopefully, you take this class and enjoy it.
This course will def test a lot of your boundries of being comforatable. we were lucky to have the uncomforatable kids drop out early, and left us with the few who were open enough. it was awsome seeing everyones side of the story, even though sometimes they would push your buttons. aside from all the learning, the class is actually a lot of fun. theres a great teacher, and awsome interaction. good stuff
This was an amazing class...if you can hang with keeping an open mind and wanting to learn about other cultures, not from what you think they are but how they really are. At first I struggled because I was so bias but after some time my mind and my heart was opened and I was able to have compassion for what is going on in Palestine and Israel. Once you learn something it is very hard to close your eyes and your heart again... this has been key... what I have learned in this class will help me when I deal with other cultures...this class was a safe place to ask questions and really get involved. Thanks Skye!
I came into this class not realizing what I was in for. It's not at all what I thought it would be. It was so much more. Personally I could have been in the class longer. One and a half hours, twice a week went by way too fast. The class is fun, informative, sometimes emotinal and sad. Some things will make you angry or even confused. You will build beautiful new relationships with classmates because of the interacting that's required. I would highly reccommend this class.
If you think that you are capable of handeling this class, then you probably are, but don't be shocked if you find yourself freakingout at one point or another during the semester. This class touches on some pretty graphic/intense stuff ,and it most certainly IS NOT the place for closeminded persons to get their fix of bashing other cultures. If you're looking to take a step outside yourself and experience something new, check this class out. Open yourself up, take it all in, and listen to what Skye has to say...she knows what she's doing.
word.
Don’t ask what Comm12 can do for you. Ask what you can do for Comm 12. Be open-minded and throw your “glasses” out of the door, because you are in for a ride. Great teacher and great people with an open mind and an open heart, if you’re lucky you will find the same diversity like I did. You will see tears and lots of laughter. But they will not laugh at you they will laugh with you. I had a great time. The workload is dealable. A lot of group work, but graded by individual portions, so no concerns about group pull downs. Be ready to bring food, lots of food. Skye loves to eat ☺
Be also ready to be “changed”, be ready to ask questions without the search for answers. Learn to speak up and shut up at the right time.
Thanks for everything.
Sign up NOW!!! They want YOU!!!
Today is out last day of class....HOW SAD :(
I will miss everyone. It was a GREAT semester!
What an amazing class this is! If you want something out of the ordinary, take Comm12 with Skye. If you’re brave enough to step out of your comfort zone and venture into new territory, take Comm 12 with Skye. I have had classes, where for an entire semester I did not know the name of the students next to me. Not so in Skye’s class. You work together in a group of students. Now there might be some differences you need to iron out in the beginning, but in the end, it all works out. This class is such an eye opener. Yes there will be homework, but it’s all take home or group work. You will look at your surroundings with different eyes and a different attitude. I have always been glad when the semester was over – not for this class. It is truly an eye opener, will make you more tolerant to accepting “different” opinions, people, cultures and life styles. This class will teach you to think on your own, this teacher will motivate you to form your own opinion, come out of your shell – the only wrong opinion in this class is to have no opinion. What a ride……
awesome class!
skye you rock as you know. will be seeing you in the future!
for all future students of this class, have fun and don't be afraid to ask questions and explore your options when choosing the religion you want to study. be open and you will learn lots. don't be afraid to let yourself feel your emotions either
have fun!

I am So looking froward to this class. every one who has taken this class says its great. i have high expectations, and no doubt this class will alter my world prespective.
Thanks Skye
I am a little worried about how much extra time is needed for this class, but I am excited to learn other points of view and about other cultures.
And Skye really is an amazing teacher, more than she knows.
Rachel Stept
I have taken almost all of Skyes classes. She is very open cool and real. I happen to be multicutural myself. She gives you freedom of speech in her classes which is cool and she lets u speak your mind. No wonder her classes are always packed! Thankyou, Jeni Bray.
This class was awesome! Skye is an amazing teacher; her experiences and stories all relate very well to the intercultural side that we do not see often with other people. You must have an open mind when you come into this class or else you will leave with a one sided opinion and not learn anything! Not only have I learned more about myself than in any other class but I am learning how to accept other people how they are, and not judge them in any aspect, escpecially from color, gender, age, or sex. All of the communication courses are vital in bettering yourself, but this class is escpecially great when you learn how to accept other cultures around you and build on relationships with other people in different cultures. Thanks again skye!

What's up? So you have decided to take Comm.12 with Skye. Great decision, you will not regret it. This class was so much fun. As such, I took a lot from this class and have since applied it to my everyday life. In Skye's class, you are going to learn a lot in a welcoming environment. You are going to look at current events, the effects of past events, and how you play a role in intercultural communication. There will be fun times, and depressing times. This just comes with the nature of what is going on in our world today. You can feel safe speaking your mind in class, for everyone's opinion is respected and encouraged to be heard. One word of advice though. Keep on top of your assignments. Everyone will be happier this way. If you come to class with an open mind, I guarantee that this will be a class that you will look forward to going to. Good Times!
-Tom Macdonald
This is class is pure awesomeness. I learned a lot and enjoyed my time while doing so. A nugget of wisdom: read the assigned readings, no matter how long they may seem to be. They are actually really good reads! Skye puts thought and energy into picking and choosing some really well written current material (versus assigning a generic textbook). Do right by her and read it.
And as others have said, come with an open mind to class and participate! Have fun, lighten up, and get into it. It’s a memorable class. I’ll miss it next semester.
This thing totally just deleted what I had typed up!
Professor Gentile is phenomenal, and this course is well worth taking, even if you are not interested in the Communication field. The readings may seem numerous, but they informative and from sources that you may not have read (or known about). A piece of advice that I can offer would be to come into the class room prepared for different perspectives on a multitude of issues. The professor is not trying to persuade you into one direction or another, just trying to help you gain and maintain a larger "lens" in which you can view the world. That whole "lens" thing will be explained later on... it is by far one of the cheesiest and corniest things that you will probably ever encounter in your education!
-Vidal
This class was a peach you guys you're going to love it very tasty. Skye is awesome shes not afraid to play with a little fire meaning dabbing into somewhat taboo topics. I totally recommened this class.
This is not like any class I have ever taken. I was able to take away so much knowledge and personal growth that I will never be as naive as I was at the beginning of the semester. Unlike other classes that you expect certain a certain academia from, this class is outside the box. I don't mean it was lacking academic knowledge, I mean it cannot be stereotyped. Take it with any other teacher and you will have a general idea of what the course will entail by reading the catalog description, and know what to expect on the first day of class. Skye presents her material to you in such a variety of ways that you forget it's a class and begin to think of it more of a special group or club you attend on campus. The reading is heavy, but she brings you into the heart of issues going on in the world now! It's not from a textbook that discusses theories or what "inter-cultural" technically means. I was able to apply many things I learned in this environment to discussions outside of class and other classes like geography, history, and political science. I have never had ONE teacher be able to cover so many things pertinent across the board.
She GIVES YOU the experiences and lets you take from it what you will. She will teach you about things going on in other cultures that you may have never known, she will challenge you to intimately explore a different culture, and most importantly she help you to see the very world you live in through many different lenses. It will be passionately charged and intellectually stimulating. Take Skye's class and you will feel honored to have had the experience.
I really enjoyed being apart of this class. Most of the time, it didn’t really geel like a typical class, it was more like a discussion group or club. I can honestly say that I will take away a lot from this semester.
My advice for students next semester for Intercultural Communications is that you’ll get as much out of this class as you put into it. If you do the readings, participate in discussions, listen to thers ideas, and be open to changing yours, then you will find this class to be very effective. You will learn more about yourself than you will anything else. It might make you angry or sad, but you will see the world in a new light. You will touch on some pretty intense feelings, but try to keep an open mind. It will be worth it.
Skye is a great teacher and perfect for Intercultural Communications. She’s sensitive to people’s feelings, yet isn’t afraid to delve into their possible hidden biases. She’s great because it is a touchy subject to deal with, but she handles it all with grace.
Being this class changed my perspective on a lot of things. I will catch myself sometimes being biased against certain groups of people, but I try to be more mindful. This is especially true for me regarding the Israel Palestine conflict, where I learned that there is a lot more than meets the eye.
Have fun! --Emily Nord
brah you betta reed all da stuff she one hand out o else she goin release one false crack medo-vac across your coconut shaped dome. That was a little taste of hawaiian pigeon! be prepared to be open minded to all thoughts and views in this class. Standing firm on only a one track mind, might cause difficulty for you. Skye is an amazing teacher, and is always helpful with any problems that you may encounter throughout the semester. Please read the handouts! There actually quite interesting and useful readings to use for everyday life. Many of the readings make you think real hard about what matters, and how you can either make a difference or at least see another persons point of view. Also, the outlines are fun to write! They'll train you to be organized and free flowing like the waves at Waimea bay on Oahu. Oops, I,started getting side tracked again. Stick with it, it's worth it to the very end! Thanks again skye for yet another wonderful comm class learning adventure! mahalos.

Skye brings a lot of knowledge, enthusiasm and compassion to the classroom. If anything, she will inspire you to care more about yourself and your perceptions that you have of the world. Hopefully, you will be inspired to learn more about the people and cultures of the world also. I had a mixed-bag of experiences in this class (some good and some not as good) yet that is how we grow.
This class will most likely be worth your time and energy... and I highly recommened taking classes from Skye!
May 2009 be filled with much happiness, peace and love for All!
Adrian
This class is a lot of fun and you will learning about yourself and others while in this class. If you are open to learning about new problems this class will open your eyes to things that you might not have known before. The group project can be difficult because meeting with group members can be hard, but as long as every one helps out you will do fine. Make sure to keep up with the readings or you will have to spend a lot of time at the end of the semester doing them. Have fun.
This was one of the best and most eye-opening classes I have ever taken. Learning about the issues in Israel and Palestine makes you really open up to extremely important issues in the world. Definitely keep up on the reading and participate, I was sometimes scared to talk in class and I wish I had taken more advantage of opening up to the class.
When choosing your culture make sure it's something that really intrigues you, I never knew about Basque Country and I am so glad that's the culture I chose...I am now planning on visiting there this summer when I go to Europe, which is another thing that Skye helped me realize I should do. She makes you want to know so much more about so many things.
This class should be required, it really helps you evaluate so many aspects of you life.
ENJOY!!!

This class was amazing to me, especially when we were looking at the Israel and Palestinian conflict. I have never had my eyes open so much before in a class, my emotions would go crazy and I would want to cry sometimes but it was great because having my emotions provoked is what helps me remember and develop a passion for things. The project were you study a culture was fun and I strongly recommend choosing a culture that you REALLY know nothing about or have a slight bias for, its great to learn new information and see things through someones else lenses. The one thing I wish we could have done a bit more was racism it left me wanting more. there is just not enough time for this class. Skye is one of the best teachers at cabrillo and really makes you want to come to her classes to see what else she can enlighten you with. Readings are a little heavy but don't worry she gives you plenty of time to do them. Overall this was a wonderful learning experience and I loved it.
Brisa
This was a great class to end my time at Cabrillo with. It was a pleasant suprise because at first my mindset was just get thru this last class. To get it over with, but in the end I found that I really appreciated this class for the freedom to express ideas and look at things from a much different perspective. I have taken a lot of forgetable classes here at Cabrillo, this was not one of them. Skye is a great teacher with a very different approach than most students are used to. Keep an open mind and you will learn a temendous amount, not only about other, mostly about yourself. Make sure you keep up on the readings (they sneak up on you) and enjoy!
I really enjoyed being in communication-12 because Skye was really outgoing and she also was a fun teacher and she also will make you have a smile in your face. I don’t consider her class as “a hard class.” What I liked about her class was outlining the readings, and our final when everyone in the class had a chance to introduce our self’s, or our culture either one.
I do recommend this class to others, because as my self I had the chance to explore or learned other cultures like the issues in Israel and the Palestine’s. In addition I had a great semester and happy to meet a hyper teacher like Skye.
Com 12 was a very unique look into what people think. I learned some things that I will surely keep with me for a long time. Some things will not change the way I live my life but will allow me to look at a situation differently & better understand where someone is coming from. TAKE THIS CLASS WITH SKYE
Hello future Comm 12 adventurers. I am one of many who can sure contest to the reality and enjoyment of this class. I struggle with many issue in the realm of intercultural communication this course helped to not only shine a light on my outward issues, but issues of self as well. I can only hope that in the future the realization of were I have been, will allow me to realize where it is I need to be.
This course, the students, the instructor, and the material information, linked an idea rather than an overall perspective. The idea of openmindedness, of understanding, of cultural uniqueness put into a warmth and solidifying togetherness that allowed even the shyest of students to find comfort in self and self-relization.
I would recommend this growing adventure in education to everyone seeking a better college future and life.
Thank you Skye for all that you do for each individual who comes into your life. I am a better person for it. Colter
Great class, covered a lot of pertinent issues in todays time and age. I felt as though it was a open-forum where anyone could speak their mind in the manner they deemed fit. For the next round of students I advise you to listen and try not to lay out your personal baggage in a negative fashion, rather investigate the differences, be a raving reporter.
Erik Lanham
Welcome to Skye's class! You have made a great choice, now in the next few months she will be helping you by giving you tools to change the format of how you think not only about your own culture, but also of cultures different than your own. My mind got opened to so many different concepts and ideas about what prejudice is and how to be mindful in not being prejudice.
My experience with the class was one of extreme group involvement and openness. I felt a lot of good group cohesion, everyone was interested in the topics at hand and most had an opinion. Skye helps set up an environment that allows you to feel comfortable with speaking about what is on your mind, even if its a sensitive subject.
The group projects are a great way to get to know you other class mates. The projects themselves are great to become passionate about. The project to go into another culture is great, and will expand your horizons so make sure to have fun with it and go into it as far as your mind will allow.
Have a great semester!!
~Melinda Crabb~
I really enjoyed this class; it's the only class I am actually bummed is over. I feel like I only got the surface of everything we covered, like there is so much left to learn...can we take it over??
I am happy to see a community of people exists that wants good for human kind, and is interested and tuned-in with each other and the world.
The only advice I have is to be focused, and do the readings on time...you will be glad you did, I am frustrated with myself for not.
Happy Winter everyone! Only 3 months until spring....
K.Lessard
Like any class you should do the work assigned and participate as much as possible. But in Skye's class you have to go above and beyond the typical "do the work" mentality that's so common with classes. If you don't put all of your heart into the material you loose out on the learning you can do that truly effects your daily lives. What it comes down to is the individual, if you keep an open mind and just follow along with what Skye teaches then yes you'll get a good grade. But if you open up a little bit you just may gain some knowledge of self along with that A. Plus, try not to be late every class for the second half of the semester ;)
-Jimmy Tam
This class is awesome!! You picked a good one, and you're lucky, cause you have the coolest teacher on the planet! Don't worry about the outlines, you can turn them any time, but don't get too far behind, they do take a little while to do. Skye loves participation so make sure to add your antidotes whenever possible. Note to the wise, when you are doing the big class presentation make sure you pick things that are interesting and unique (skye is very cultured so make sure its something a little abnormal) it makes the presentation more fun. She doesn't take roll but she does cover a lot of material, so try to be at every class but you don't necessarily have to be on time (sometimes its Skye who is the late one!) Have a great time and get your culture on!!! Laters ----- MIKEY
This is the best class and best teacher every. If you are unsure of a major take one class from Skye and you will know that you want to major in Communications. This class covered a lot of material but she is very tolerant of late work and makes the class tons of fun. Skye puts everything into a perspective that fits each students needs. She has great advice and is amazingly brilliant. This class will teach you a lot about different cultures and how are communication can be offensive to them. This class will help you have a better understanding and also help you get over any prejudiced if you have any. Skye rocks take all your communication classes from her!! She is the reason I switched my major and the reason I have more effective communication skills.
True to my form, i didnt complete this until the first day of spring sememster, heheh. Okay, so Skye is a little scattered at times and always a little bit on edge(but looks good doing it and is super spunky), i can assure you that you will not regret taking any class with her, especially this one. I am more informed about the world and have learned skills that say "hey i may not think or act like you, but we can respect, learn, and enjoy one another." Class is fun, interactive, exciting, heartbreaking, and real. Be ready to broaden your horizon. have a great sememster, your in for a good one
Have you ever heard that song "Like Whoa". That is what I feel after reading these letters. I am prepared to let myself absorb the thoughts of others. It is necessary to not be so aggressive.
This class is used as a form for Skye's personal avocations. She's a wonderful woman with a great heart to help people but if your looking for a challenging course that will stretch your worldview, don't take this course. This class is Skye presenting her opinion as truth and other worldviews as flawed. This class is the definition of intolerance manifest with the mask of tolerance. Skye's personal feelings against different points of view such as conservatism, Christianity and traditional views of value in general are constantly on display from the first day of class to the last.
If you truly want to expand your worldview move out of the country, experience a culture firsthand, learn cross cultural communication through action, learn a new language, get uncomfortable. The worst thing you can do is take a class that reinforces the doctrines and worldviews you've been brought up with living in Santa Cruz and doesn't challenge you as a person. This is such a class. Only one side of every conflict is shown. Going somewhere else and seeing that conflict first hand is the only way to understand all sides.
Skye is a wonderful woman with a great heart but this class is not what's advertised and because of this I have to caution students against taking this class.
Jamie Snider
I enjoyed reading the comments of the past students and I am excited to experience this class for myself. I am happy to be in this class with you Skye, and I hope I get out of this class as much as the other past students have, and I am going to keep my mind open so I can achieve that. It sounds like this class will be challenging at times but I will take the advice from other students and hope to overcome them. YAY! So excited.
Jade Zerpa
I have read and heard great things about this class and professor Skye. I'm excited to learn about new cultures and learn more about my own.The students who have previously taken this class write about how this class has change the way they see things and how it made them more aware of what is going on in the world. I am open to learn and experience new things and meet some great people.
Jade Zerpa
I am glad to here all the feedback....This is my first time with Skye and she awesome. I look forward to learning some control over my voice since I have no problem with expressing how I feel but I do have a problem with realizing when I've said enough. I am crazy stoked on this class and looking forward to the rest of the semester!
Summer White
All the comments of past students that have taken this class say that it was an incredible experience were they learned alot because of the great teacher... Which makes me relieved because I know I will enjoy the class and get something out of it not only that but I will be able to learn from a great teacher...This class sounds like it will be an eye opener with controversial topics and ideas... But, I think im ready I want to see things i dont see or better yet see things through others eyes...Isela Sandoval
I am really relieved that everyone from the past classes have enjoyed this class and said it was a good experience! I wasn't sure what to expect, so I hope to get a lot out of this class and have a good time doing it. So far Skye seems great and out there with her own opinion which is fantastic. I hope to learn a lot and have my eyes opened a lot more to the world around me.
Amber Valles
The comments from past students confirm what I had hoped i would be getting out of this class. A teacher with a real passion for her subject, which in this case is intercultural communications, and I look forward to learning points of views, current topics, and opening my mind to see how a different pair of eyes than my own view the world.
-Rose Zeitler
I have taken many of Skye's classes and I would have to say I am never tired of here ability to open your mind even more then you could even imagen. I would recommend for this class to listen and read. Skye chooses articles that fit perfectly with her lectures. Sometimes I feel that students at Cabrillo take communications class because they feel that they are easy or they are trying to cover a needed unit. I would ask you, if you are one of these students, please take the time to truly take part in this class. It isn't just to help you become a better communicatior to others, but for yourslef. I have found that this class and the many other communications class offered at Cabrillo allow you to become more involved in your thought process. This connection to my thought process has also heloped me in many of my other classess and outside of school. Whether it is breaking or understanding a cultural barrier or working in a group atmosphere, I see how my communication process have truly begon to improve. Please take the time to truly take what you can from this class and listen.
- Gwen Krebs
I had a great time in this class and I really enjoyed it. I learned much more that I had originally thought I would. This class helped me to open my mind to different issues that in the past I felt much differently about. Emotions of all sorts whirled throughout the semester. If your signed up for this class, be ready for a great semester.
-Teddy Kosciolek
So far, one the best classes I've taken. Skye is a very open person and is very passionate about the class. In turn, I have become passionate about the class. She's helping me open up to issues I've never heard and also gives me the tools to work them out. Thanks, Skye.
Comm 12 is a great class and if you have the opportunity of having Skye as your teacher, then I highly recommend adding her to your schedule. She keeps your attention and her lectures are in no way boring. Attendance is a definite requirement but the work load is very low and class always seems to fly by. If I had the opportunity to take another one of Skye's classes, I definitely would. Classes like this are a great way to start your day and if you are taking an immense amount of credits, they make your schedule seem not as intense; so take the class already!!
-Brittany Sabatier
Comm 12 is pretty basic.. Skye makes it funny and exciting and doesn't leave one moment for boredom. There's a lot of work but is easy. The mid term was the hardest, which was three 2 pg. essays. Just don't fall behind and keep up on doing the work and you'll be fine.
Comm 12 is easy if you simply do the work and go to class. If you are lazy you will not do well! If you put in effort then you will be fine. Skye is awesome and an entertaining teacher. There are a lot of films shown in class mixed with a few power point lectures.
Hi! If you are looking for a class that you want to enjoy it is Comm 12.It really makes you think out of your own world and it will help you to be a better person. Besides that it will learn more about other cultures because you will experience field trips where you will socialize with other people from other cultures. This class is great because you get to your voice opinion on different topics and you hear other people’s opinions. If you like to watch videos that help you to become a better person this is that class were you probably will watch many. The hardest of this class is the midterm essay because but if you do well and do all you homework you well easy pass the class with a good grade. I really enjoyed this class because I didn’t feel any pressure to do my homework and I learned a lot about other cultures.
What you should know before you take this class is that it will open your perspectives on many different topics, and is good if you like to follow the news. Skye is a very passionate and well informed teacher and you will love her zany ways. She encourages discussions, and participation in class, so it isn't for the shy.
You will be glad you have taken this class.
If you are looking for a real class that opens you as you are take comm 12 and leave behind the what you pretend to be. I have learned a lot from this class very powerful in the whole sense of learning, experiencing and understanding other cultures. Sky is an excellent teacher. I would definitely take this class again.
The Skye is the limit. :) Her teachings have inspired me to switch to a communications major! Working with Skye has given me a visual experience that I could not have enjoyed more. She loves to play movies and I love to watch them. Having shed a few tears throughout these films, she has left me in a whirl of emotion. Her exams are the best, might I add. Skye's understanding of test anxiety really allowed for us to work in our time to complete the exam and left me feeling less stressed all around. Thank you Skye for everything, you are my inspiration and I will greatly enjoy spending next semester with you! :) dv
This is a class that you will take beyond the classroom. It will make you look deep inside and you may find things that challenge your concept of yourself. Skye is simply awesome--encouraging, interesting, and, of course, knows the topic well. I learned as much about other cultures as I did about myself. Be prepared to do some soul searching besides what you learn in class.

If I could take another class over and over again it would be COMM12. In my entire life as a student I had never taken a class that left me so much knowlege on how to be a better person. Skye is a person with such energy and devotion to her students that I would recommend this class to anyone. I personally left with such gratitude that I am having second thoughts about the career I'm taking. All of the topics we learned opened my eyes to see that there is something much bigger in the world and that is acceptance to any one. Again I thank Sky for all her knowlege and devotion to the class that I will see her again next semester.
Skye is great, funny, and interesting, she makes class fun. I would suggest staying caught up on all work and finishing at least one outline a week. If you have problems going out in public and maybe talking to a few people this may not be the class for you. The sylibus may be a little intimidating if your unfamiliar with cultural work, but it's totally doable.CH
This class was a very interesting class. Skye made sure there was never a dual moment. There is alot of reading and you do need to do outlines. I would suggest that you get the outlines done as soon as possible so you can really just sit back and enjoy the class and soak up all the information. If you are shy you will need to come out of your bubble. Towards the end of the semester we had to do a presentation about who we are. A presentation about our culture, it is mandatory. Overall I would suggest taking any of Syky's classes she is a very good teacher.
Comm 12 was a great class. It taught me to be more mindful and open to other cultures and ideas. The class is very interesting and we get to learn a lot through visuals especially videos about different cultures. I would definitely like to retake this class again if possible! There are many readings and its good to stay on top of it and do the outlines. The teacher... She is wonderful she is very open and outgoing she makes the class interesting and fun! You should definitely take this class! <3
This class is as easy or hard as you want to make it. If you keep up with the reading/outlines, don't put off the midterm essay to the last minute and attend class it is an easy A. Lots of movies and discussions. Taking a class field trip to Chinatown was one of my favorite things this semester. This is a class I am glad I took.
I thoroughly enjoyed every day of COMM 12. MY mind was expanded, my world opened to new ideas, and every single day of class I left with a new layer of knowledge or appreciation for the world which I previously did not have. Skye will throw things at the class that bring about emotions, both good and bad. This may sound intimidating, and sometimes it is but I promise you it is worth it. Take this class and explore as much as you possibly can every single day you enter through the classroom doors. Be prepared to be confused, have mixed emotions, and feel uncomfortable...you will learn so much more this way. I loved this class and it will be one I remember forever. As far as homework, Keep Up With It!! It isn't fun writing a lot of outlines all in one weekend at the end of the semester:) And in all your works, be honest and be real, don't hold back... you will gain more than you bargained for! Enjoy

I'm hoping to learn to get past any implicit biases I may have and to communicate better with people from cultures other than my own as well as communicating with people in my own culture better, not really sure if I have a culture. Maybe I'll learn that I actually do have a culture, though I don't believe what culture I do have is all that common in this Conservative Religious States of America that I was born in. It would be nice to be part of some kind of culture.
I am so excited for this class, to learn more about understanding not only my culture but others as well. I am also looking forward to having a class with skye because i have heard so many great things about her. I have never really felt comfortable with my culture and everything it entails, so I enter this class with an open mind and hope I learn to accept myself. I am excited for the possible field trips that everyone loves and everything this class has to offer.

This class sounds exceptional and I'm really looking forward to it! I've never read so many positive comments from students. I truly hope I walk away from this class as excited as some of these past students. I welcome new experiences and in gaining a bit of enlightenment along the way!
Dear future Comm 12 student,
In order to be successful in this class, I would first recommend you to attend every class, if that is possible for you. If you attend every class, you will be able to receive the best real-life learning experience. As part of this real-life experience, you will be able to participate in an Intercultural Field Experience, which you will attend three different intercultural events. This is such a wonderful opportunity to be able to attend an event and analyze its intercultural connections. In addition, connection is one of the themes. Make sure you note and connect the themes as part of you positive learning experience.
Even though some classes at Cabrillo you just attend the class, and you will learn the material well; however, this class is not just about learning about the material. For example, it is about the in-depth group work, in-class participation. In addition, as a student in this class, not only will you be able to learn individually, but you will be able to learn collaboratively and creatively. Unlike many other classes that you will attend and have attended, in this class you will be able to have the unique opportunity to speak in inner circle conversations, learning how to listen to other perspectives. In addition, I suggest that you participate in the Web Presence, which is extremely significant in today’s expanding technological-related learning that will prepare you for technology-related job skills in the future. Not only is this important in order to prepare you for your future classes and career, but this class will allow you to be more open-minded by communicating sensitive issues in non-face-to-face situations. Of course, I advise you to openly consider the opinions of multiple perspectives and authors. Unlike many other courses that usually only have one textbook with generally one to three authors, this professor provides you with multiple authors, providing multiple and alternative perspectives, that most likely will not be possible if you read only one textbook or listened to the mainstream American media.
Not only should you have an open-minded approach to learning, but you should keep up-to-date on the information on the website and the professor’s e-mails because the professor will frequently post very informative and interesting learning quizzes. Basically, this professor offers a wide variety of teaching approaches that will cater to nearly every learning style, whether it is watching, doing, seeing, or touching, this class contains all of these learning styles. I wish you good luck, and I hope you succeed in this class.
Thanks for your time,
Rachel Rose
This class has been on my bucket list for a while. Now I'm finally enrolled, and with what seems to be a fun group of people. Lets help each other get out of our comfort zones and learn together :)

I'm really looking forward to what this class has to offer! Skye is an awesome teacher I have had her previously and she is a really enthusiastic person. I'm interested to see peoples POV within this class and I hope to learn a lot not only about myself but also how others see the world.
After I read all of comments about this class,I'm so exited to take this journey, learn, participate and enjoy it.I'm a person that expect to learn and also to fell this dynamic which inspires me. I know Mrs Skye has all the requisites for it.This is going to be a great semester for all of us.Thanks for the inspiration.
i am really looking forward to this class! i'm taking an english class where we are focusing on culture differences and similarities. Also i am taking a psych class, so i'm excited to learn and really be able to surround myself with all the different ideas and opinions that arent mine. i want to become an elementary school teacher and think that this knowledge can really gelp me succeed in not only learning about myself and how to better my views on all the people around me, but to teach children the same. ACCETANCE and LOVE.
I am very excited about this class! I think that it will be fun and I am hoping to learn about other cultures and my own as well. Can't wait to dive right in!
I'm a little excited for this class, lately ive been taking classes that push u into cooperating. I'm trying to meet a different group of people and learn about people. Still trying to get pushed to boundaries to talk more and have more to talk about. And this seems like the perfect class by the looks of it.
I'm really excited about taking this class, especially because I have had Skye before and she is a phenomenal teacher. I am looking forward to class discussions and hearing different perspectives on the topics we are going to discuss. I am also glad that i will be furthering my communications skill in a way I never have before.
This class seems like it is going to be a blast. Learning about all other cultures has always interest me, and learning how my own personal perspectives of proper/improper communication differs among other cultures. With Skye at the head of the wheel on this one, I am sure this is plenty of awesome in-store for me.
I'm always really happy when a class turns out to be heavily discussion-based; even happier when the whole class participates and has a lot of interesting and relevant stories/perspectives to share. By the end of this course, I hope I'll have learned to understand, not only what other people think/believe, but WHY and HOW they do. I think knowing the Why and the How will help me communicate with others more effectively than just knowing the What.

Wow is all I have to say. From the minute you walk into this class one instantly falls in love. The teachers a blast, has buckets of jokes and funny voices to boot. Skye I beleive, is a person whom can teach the delicate balance that is humility love and appreciation.
This is the second course I take with Skye and I already had an idea of what the course as going to be like. A high energy class that is socially demanding which pushes your limits. You'll get to learn new things about yourself and the people around you. I am excited to meet all of you and I hope we have a great time in class!

Having taken a class with Skye before I knew her passion for communications is a force tobe reckoned with. I decided to take this class, because I wanted to learn more about other cultures and our the indivdual role we play in accepting and living side by side with them.
I guess I'm taking this class for my general education. So far i love the teacher she is very enthusiastic. I'm really shy but her enthusiasm makes me want to open up tp the class and be like her. she makes me feel at home.
I am taking this course for mainly two reasons, because I am multicultural myself, and to learn about how other cultures communicate. To this point, I have found the class to be very interesting and fun.
This was the most amazing class I have ever taken. It takes you on an adventure to places where you might have never seen on your own.(Without leaving the class!) Be prepared because your life will never be the same. Your outlook on life will have a new meaning. Skye is an amazing instructor and woman!
